Types of Thermal Insulation Materials: Choose the Best Option for Your Constructions

Thermal insulation plays a key role in construction, providing comfort, energy savings and protection of buildings from external climatic conditions. It helps to maintain an optimal indoor temperature, reducing heating and air conditioning costs.

Thermal insulation materials have diversity in various parameters such as shape, composition, structure and type of raw materials used. Depending on their composition and characteristics, installation techniques and applications differ.

Why do I need thermal insulation?

Thermal insulation helps keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This is especially important for residential and commercial buildings where temperatures need to remain stable. In addition, quality thermal insulation:

  • Prevents condensation, which can lead to rot and mold.
  • Helps to improve the acoustic performance of rooms.

Types of thermal insulation materials

There are several types of thermal insulation materials, and each has its own characteristics.

Extrusion polystyrene foam (XPS)

XPS is a high-density polystyrene foam that has excellent thermal insulation properties and water-resistant characteristics.

Advantages:

  • Low thermal conductivity.

Such insulation practically does not absorb moisture (water absorption coefficient is 0.2 %). It is widely used in foundation construction, including in regions with waterlogged and wet soils.

  • The material consists of 97% air, which makes it much lighter than mineral wool or polyurethane foam and minimizes the weight of structures.
  • Resistance to biological corrosion

Thermal insulation from XPS is not subject to destruction under the influence of fungal microorganisms. Even with prolonged contact with moist soil on it do not form pockets of mold.

XPS is often used for thermal insulation of floors, walls, roofs and foundations.

Mineral/stone wool

Mineral and stone wool is a fibrous material, which is obtained from the melts of rocks, as well as metallurgical slags and their mixtures. Most often the world manufacturers of mineral and stone wool use rocks as raw materials.  This ensures high quality characteristics of mineral and stone wool, which allows it to withstand a long service life and is not afraid of open fire.

Mineral wool and stone wool have unique properties:

Fire Resistance: Non-combustible melts provide high thermal resistance, making it ideal for insulating rooms with flammable materials.

Biological resistance: Not affected by fungi and rodents, meeting sanitary standards.

Non-hygroscopic: Absorbs only 0.5% of moisture.

Vapor permeability: Helps to create a comfortable microclimate by removing water vapor.

Low thermal conductivity: Effective in thermal insulation, saving on resources.

Soundproofing: Effectively dampens sound waves.

Environmentally friendly: Safe for human consumption.

Easy to install: Easy to cut and lay on any surface.
